Pulsed Electrical Field (PEF) Ablation

A Revolutionary Treatment to Prostate Cancer Care

What is PEF Ablation?

Pulsed Electrical Field (PEF) ablation is a gentle, non-thermal treatment that uses short electrical pulses to target and destroy prostate cancer cells without heating or burning the tissue. During the procedure, a thin probe is placed directly into the area of the prostate where the cancer is located. The electrical pulses create tiny openings in the cancer cell walls, causing them to die while leaving the surrounding healthy tissue, nerves, and urinary structures unharmed. By precisely targeting only the cancerous tissue while preserving the surrounding healthy prostate, patients benefit from high accuracy, fewer side effects, and rapid recovery.

Your Treatment Journey

Advanced Planning

Before the procedure, each patient undergoes high-resolution imaging, including either multi-parametric MRI or PET-CT. These scans are used to precisely localize the cancer within the prostate and determine the extent and aggressiveness of the tumor.

Surgical Intervention

Using a proprietary, image-guided surgical navigation system, a 3D map of the patient's prostate is created. This allows the physician to accurately visualize the location and boundaries of the tumor in real time. Plan and navigate the probe trajectory with sub-millimeter precision and maximize cancer control while preserving surrounding structures.

Recovery

Patients return home the same day with minimal pain, controlled by Tylenol or Ibuprofen. Most patients go home urinating on their own and return to normal activities within 1-2 days.

How PEF Works

The PEF procedure offers an exciting opportunity to revolutionize cancer care by triggering a systemic immune response that can target and control cancer beyond the localized treatment site.

Directly Destroys Cancer Cells: Pulsed Electrical Field (PEF) Ablation applies high-voltage electrical pulses to a cancer cell, causing irreversible damage to cell membranes and leading to cancer cell death at the treatment site.

Damaged Cancer Cells Release Antigens: The damaged cancer cells release cancer-specific antigens and other signals that are recognized by the immune system as a result of the treatment.

Immune System Activation: These released antigens and signals stimulate the immune system, activating it to target and attack cancer cells not just at the treatment site, but also in other areas of the body.

Systemic Immune Response: The activated immune system can now recognize and attack cancer cells elsewhere in the body, leading to the abscopal effect - the shrinkage or control of distant, untreated cancer.

Precise & Focused

Targets only the cancerous area (focal therapy), preserving the healthy parts of the prostate.

Is PEF Right for You?

PEF is an innovative option, often best suited for men with localized prostate cancer (cancer confined to the prostate gland) that is visible on imaging like MRI. It is important to note that eligibility requires a thorough evaluation, including review of biopsy results, PSA levels, imaging, and overall health.

Ideal candidates typically have the following:

  • Cancers identifiable via MRI or advanced ultrasound.
  • Desire to minimize side effects and preserve urinary and sexual function.
  • Interest in focal therapy (treating only the cancer) rather than the whole prostate gland.
