Medications and Supplements

Peyronie’s disease is one of the most common penile conditions in the United States. It’s not entirely known why but many doctors believe it has to do with persistent damage to the penis. Usually, surgery is the first suggested treatment.

The goal is to correct the penis and clear up the scar tissue. But there are some less invasive treatments available. One possible alternative to surgery is oral medication. Although not as effective as surgery, these treatments have been successful in treating Peyronie’s disease.

Medications and Alternative Treatments for Peyronie’s Disease

Surgery always carries risks. Infection, bleeding and immune complications can compromise your overall health. Some people may choose to treat their Peyronie’s disease with less invasive medical methods. Fortunately, there are several treatments that have proven to be effective.

  • Collagenase – An oral medication that has shown to correct the curvature of the penis. It is the only FDA-approved alternative to surgery.
  • Verapamil – Normally used to treat high blood pressure, this oral medication has shown promising signs for correcting the curvature of the penis by breaking up the scar tissue all while reducing pain.
  • Interferon – While not much is yet known about this treatment, early signs have shown the protein breaks up the scar tissue in the penis caused by Peyronie’s disease.

These procedures have various advantages for people who are prone to illness, have an aversion to surgery or a relatively small scarring and curvature of the penis.
